Makam Sultan Iskandar Muda

Banda Aceh

Description

Iskandar Muda's grave is located near Krueng Daroy, adjacent to Meuligoe Aceh, the official residence of the Governor of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, adjacent to the Aceh Museum. This tomb was eliminated by the Dutch during the war in Aceh.

Then on December 19th 1952, the location of the grave can be rediscovered, because of the command given by the former queen of an Aceh Sultan named Pocut Meurah.

Sultan Iskandar Muda ruled the Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam in 1607-1636, and brought it to its peak. In the 17th century, the Kingdom of Aceh was ranked fifth largest among the Islamic kingdoms in the world. At that time, Banda Aceh has become an international trade city, stop by foreign ships carrying crops from Asia to the European continent.

Sultan Iskandar Muda is also known as a just king, especially to his own family. One of his sons named Meurah Pupok was beheaded in public for making a big mistake. The grave of Meurah Pupok is inside KerKhoff Peutjoet complex.

The incident raised the pride of the Acehnese: Adat bak Po Temeuruhoom, Hukom bak Syiah Kuala, which means “Tradition kept by the Sultan, the law is in Syiah Kuala”. Syiah Kuala is another name for Tengku Abdul Rauf As Singkili, an Acehnese scholar (Imam) of 17th-century scholar who is renowned expert in jurisprudence and civility.
